The Lord Nelson is a Brighton pub with a long history and a lively present. Located appropriately in Trafalgar Street, this is a proper pub, not one of those themed and branded alcohol filling stations all too common nowadays. From the etched glass windows to the pumps serving Harveys excellent beers, the interior meets all George Orwell's requirements for the classic English public house. The Nelson is not however a fossilised relic of the past and, in today's market, it wouldn't be still here if it was. Football is shown on a big screen, tasty food is cooked on the premises and the large conservatory at the back doubles as an art gallery. Apart from regulars and visitors of every age and type, the Nelson is used as a meeting place for sports clubs, community groups and (this would please Orwell) local freelance journalists. Two recent postings on the "beerintheevening" website show how successful the Lord Nelson is at bringing tradition up to date. "Great pub, friendly people, good beer" and "Top place, just go there". But not everybody on a Friday night, please.
