This week's pictures take a look at street rubbish. It's worse in summer, especially in seaside resorts like Brighton, where these pictures were taken on the last weekend of July 2006. And, of course, it smells. We're all to blame for the tide of litter left lying about our streets, but the root causes of the throwaway culture must be consumerism and packaging. It is arguable that waste is the product of commercial interest rather than individual choice. We eat fast food and throw away the containers, but it is the fast food companies that make and promote it so massively. The supermarkets are just the same, for all their current sanctimoniousness about recycling. If all this crap wasn't made in the first place, we wouldn't need to recycle it. Street rubbish may be great for seagulls, but it's become a big problem for the rest of us.
