John Betjeman described Ludlow as "probably the loveliest town in England" and, visiting it last week, it's hard to say he was wrong. There are over 500 listed buildings, including entire streets of Georgian and half-timbered houses plus a splendidly ruined castle. The shops are almost all independent, there's an excellent market and the town is justifiably famous as a centre for good, local food. At least six butchers do thriving business and are especially well known for their sausages, while the town's restaurants have more Michelin stars between them than anywhere else outside London. Ludlow hosts its annual food festival in the first week in September and expects at least 17000 people. That's an awful lot of sausages.
