This week's pictures come from the seaside town of Aberystwyth in West Wales. It's a small place, but the resident population of 12,000 is almost doubled by the students attending the University of Wales, founded in 1872. Besides education, Aberystwyth is also a market town and seaside resort, complete with a pier (albeit truncated after a storm in 1938) and donkey rides on the promenade. With the Cambrian mountains like a fortress behind it, Aberystwyth feels a long way from England and, reinforcing this, the town was the birthplace of both the Welsh Language Society and the Welsh Evangelical Church. Eight of the ten pictures in this week's set were taken this month (August 2006) and there are also two from earlier visits in 1987 and 1992. There used to be an Indian restaurant on the end of the pier. That's gone, unfortunately, but not much else has changed in this quiet little town on the far Welsh coast.
