A boat trip on the Thames in July 2002
Today's picture set features six images of a boat trip on the Thames during the evening of July 6th. Most of the river traffic in London now consists of pleasure boats of one kind or another, though there are still barges transporting bulk materials and rubbish. The banks of the Thames between Battersea and Docklands have changed greatly in recent years, mainly because of the development of offices and expensive apartment blocks, many of them vulgar and derivative in design. New public buildings have, however, also been built on the river, including the Millennium Dome (now empty but due to be converted to an entertainment venue) and the curiously ovoid erection that contains the Greater London Authority. The most dramatic and popularly successful addition to the Thameside cityscape is the London Eye, which is in theory to be demolished within four years.
