Portsmouth city and docks in October 2002

Portsmouth, the home of the Royal Navy, is also a place of history and contrast. A short walk from the grandeur of its City Hall is one of the most depressing and derelict shopping centres in the country. The harbour, however, remains full of activity and HMS Victory is splendidly preserved in the naval dockyard.
