Salman Rushdie demonstration in London in May 1989

Today's pictures of the week are of a demonstration in 1989 that brought thousands of British Muslims to London's Hyde Park to protest against Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses". Thirteen years later and, as we know all too well, Islam and the West are no nearer mutual understanding and tolerance.
