The streets of Amsterdam in July 1988

Continuing the tour of European cities, today's pictures of the week look at Amsterdam in the summer of 1988. The liberal atmosphere of this historic Dutch city attracts visitors from all over the world, but it is also a major centre for international trade and business. One of the best aspects of Amsterdam is the protection given to its old buildings and traditional network of streets and canals. Unlike Rotterdam, which was massively bombed during the Second World War, the heart of Amsterdam remains much as it has been for over two centuries.
