The streets of Berlin in January 2001

Today's pictures of the week conclude the recent series about various European cities. Berlin at the beginning of 2001 was already the official capital of united Germany, but the city still retains the evidence of its division between 1945 and 1989.  The character of East Berlin is still very different from the former western zone and throughout the German capital there are plenty of visual memories of the turbulent years of the first half of the 20th century.
