The West Pier 1988-2003

Brighton's West Pier was the jewel of the English seaside for more than a century and it is now one of the most magnificent ruins in Europe. On the last Sunday morning of 2002, the central walkway and much of the elegant concert hall collapsed into the sea and it is questionable how much longer the rest of the structure can survive the winter weather.  The neglect, timidity and incompetence of almost all the parties involved in the recent history of the West Pier is quite shameful. There are no excuses for the present situation, since money was allocated over four years ago by the UK's National Lottery for the pier's rescue and renovation. Today's pictures of the week show the West Pier from 1988 to 2003.
