Brighton weddings 1991-1995

Brighton's reputation as the place to go for a dirty weekend has not prevented the town from becoming a popular venue for marriages. Nowadays you can get married at the Pavilion, on the Palace Pier, in numerous hotels and even up at the racecourse.  A Brighton wedding may not provide better odds on the couple having a lifetime of marital bliss than one conducted in, say, Basildon or Ponders End, but it is certainly likely to be a lot more fun on the day. Before the liberalisation of official wedding locations, the old Brighton registry office was where you got hitched. This was in Royal York Buildings, a fine but decaying edifice that also contained - fortunately on an upper floor and with a separate entrance - the local clap clinic. After the civil ceremony, the wedding party could cross to the lawns and fountain of the Old Steine for their photographs. This week's picture sequence shows five couples getting married here during the early 1990s.
