All sorts of statues

Statues were in the news last week as the world saw a huge effigy of Saddam Hussein pulled down and joyfully dismembered in Baghdad.  No sign as yet of the real Saddam, nor of a peaceful conclusion to the war, but the Iraqi despot's days as a visual feature of every square and traffic intersection in his unhappy country are clearly at an end.  As a general rule, the more statues and portraits there are of a country's leader, the less democracy you will find there (though by that measure, there should by now be at least a few stone or marble Tony Blairs dotted about London).  But statues are not always of the powerful and often the messages they convey are not quite what their creators intended.  Today's pictures of the week offers a choice of ten images of statues from around London, Brighton and Europe.
