Mural, mural on the wall ...
The site's pictures of the week series has recently been focussing on the visual arts of urban life, starting with shop windows and going on to statues and then to stencil graffiti. This week looks at murals, with images from Brighton, London and Hastings. Painting on walls is probably the oldest art in the world, though murals today are as likely to have been done with a spray can as a brush. They are made for all sorts of reasons - businesses use them for advertising, some people put them up as creative or political statements and others just want to decorate the outside of their homes for the sheer joy of it. Whatever the reason, a good mural will almost always brighten up the scene.
