The royal wedding of Andy and Fergie in July 1986

Although anticipated as a relatively low-key affair, the splicing of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson proved surprisingly popular on the day.  Crowds of royal enthusiasts assembled in the Mall and some of them even took up their positions on the previous evening.  This was not a fairy-tale marriage like that of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer five years before, nor, as it proved, did it turn out to be any longer lasting.  Jolly rather than joyous, the atmosphere was as English as sunshine and showers, as British as baked beans on toast.
