Gay Pride 2003

Brighton's first gay pride was back in 1973 and just a few dozen took part. Thirty years later and 90,000 people enjoyed themselves on August 9th at the biggest, and arguably the best, free gay celebration in Britain. A flamboyant parade from the seafront led to an afternoon of heat and fun in the city's Preston Park. Stalls selling dildos and "energy" drinks stood cheek by jowl with others manned by the Inland Revenue and the Sussex Police. One huge tent throbbed with dance music, while another held cabaret and displays of line dancing. The tinkle of champagne glasses in the posh bar was accompanied by whoops of delight from the bungee jump. It was out, it was loud and it was all great fun.
