Two community festivals in Brighton in August 2003

Late summer is a popular time for community festivals and Brighton has more than its share of interesting events.  Last weekend saw both the Brunswick Festival, set in one of the grandest Regency squares in Hove, and Hanover Day, based in the Church of the Annunciation and the hilly network of narrow streets to the north east of the centre of Brighton. The Brunswick celebration mixes gentility and hedonism on lawns laid out with a view across to the sea.  Hanover Day, by contrast, fills streets of small Victorian terraced houses with stalls and a religious procession led by a fine sculpted figure of the Madonna.  Both events share the universal urban desire to get out and have some fun in the summer sunshine.
