The heatwave of August 2003

Even with summer over, it is hard to forget the extraordinarily hot weather of August 2003.  Large numbers of elderly people died in England and France as a result of the high temperatures, but many others enjoyed the blistering days (if not the steamy nights).  Brighton seafront could have doubled for the South of France were it not for the pebbles and the smell of burgers and onions.  London, never designed for a Mediterranean climate, was not as comfortable with its buildings like ovens, its pavements sizzling and the trains packing up.  These ten pictures come from the coast and the capital during the hottest fortnight of the year.
