Hare Krishna, Hare London, Hare Brighton
The chanting devotees of the Hare Krishna movement have for decades been a familiar sight on city streets around the world. Started in New York in 1965 by a Hindu called Swami Prabhupada, the movement received its biggest boost when it was taken up by George Harrison in 1969 and the late Beatle bought a large mansion in Hertfordshire for the followers to use as a base. Hare Krishna believers promote their ideals by chanting their mantra in public parades, selling their books and providing vegetarian food in their inexpensive cafes. They also have a spectacular chariot that is brought out for special events, including their annual visit to Brighton seafront. The pictures in this set come from London in 1984 and 1987 and Brighton in 2002 and 2003.
